Gymnastics has officially taken a major step forward in Vanuatu, with Vanuatu Gymnastics formally established on 23 April 2026, marking an important milestone for the sport across the Oceania region.
With the support of the Oceania Gymnastics Union (OGU), the new federation brings together a committed group of local leaders to guide the sport’s development in the country.
Marcellina San Jose has been appointed President, supported by Vice President Lydie Petersen-Visser, Treasurer Jean-Laus Morin and Secretary General Theophile Tari. They are joined by founding club member Richard Hinton and committee member Henry Tavoa.
The Vanuatu Gymnastics board brings a strong mix of experience across both corporate and sporting environments, with members having previously held board roles across a range of organisations.
The organisation has the backing of the Vanuatu Sports Ministry and the Vanuatu Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee (VASANOC), providing a strong platform for the sport’s growth.
OGU President Kitty Chiller said the establishment of the federation reflects a broader focus on growing gymnastics across the region.
“Gymnastics is a foundation sport. It helps people of all ages build coordination, strength and confidence in their bodies. Being able to grow that across the Pacific is a key focus for OGU,” said Kitty.
The addition of Vanuatu, alongside planned recognition of Samoa and the Solomon Islands, will see OGU grow from eight to eleven national federations, further strengthening the sport’s presence across Oceania.
Vanuatu Gymnastics President Marcellina San Jose said the priority is now to build strong foundations for the sport locally.
“Our immediate focus is to get the federation properly established,” Marcellina said. “From there, we can develop local coaches and create quality programs for people across Vanuatu.”

To coincide with the formation of the federation, two ‘Come n Try’ Gymnastics sessions were held across the weekend, introducing Gym4All and Parkour to local children in a fun and accessible way.
Both sessions were well attended, highlighting strong early interest and provided a positive start for Vanuatu Gymnastics.
With momentum already building, attention now turns to continuing to grow participation opportunities and support the development of gymnastics across the country.
